Monster Hunter Wilds: What Changes are Coming to the Series?
From Monster Hunter World’s (MHW) great success. Where it sold a combined 26.3 million copies. To the other smaller less popular games like Monster Hunter Frontier Z . The beloved series of many, what’s the 6th generation of monster hunter, Monster Hunter Wilds (wilds) going to be like?
So there’s quite a few things changing in the next generation of Monster Hunter. First of all and by far the biggest change is Wilds going to be an open-world game. For the longest time the series has been a ARPG(action role playing game). This switch from ARPG to a Open-World game will change the game play as well as how Capcom designs the monsters as well as weapons, new mechanics, and moves for the weapons. We’ve seen some of these changes through trailers.
This has been shown through some of the new mechanics shown such as the focus mode, which allows the player to focus on one specific point. By focusing on a point in the middle of the screen and the focus point is dictated by where your camera is which means it can be moved. And this mechanic is used in several ways throughout the gameplay we’ve seen. Mainly by allowing the player to attack one point for example a broken part, or to attempt to stun the monster via focusing attacks on the head. As well as make glowing red spots pop up on the monster and allowing those to be popped for extra damage. But some weapons from what we know use this mechanic as more of an aim for their projectiles. Mainly Light Bowgun and Heavy Bowgun which allows for more accuracy when taking shots as to not risk losing many ammo typings.
Some new moves such as the insect glaives spin once on top of a monster. Which seems to be a move that can only be accessed once in the air. And once hit impales your glaive into the monster allowing you to spin doing damage the monster, the Lance’s new guard counter allowing you to transition into several different moves, and even the Hunting Horn got spoiled in the new game with several moves one being a move called echo bubble placing a field that grants a special effect and dealing damage to the monster. Based off the wording of this move in the trailer there’s going to be multiple variations that grant different buffs and can there be more than one as shown so maybe each hunting horn gets 3?
Next the whole point of monster hunter: what do the monsters look like and what are some potential moves we’ll see them use ? I’ll only cover one of the monsters we’ve seen so far. And who would figure it’s the rail gun wyvern. An apex of the Windward Plains it’s the Rey Dau only appearing on rainy days with lighting and thunder channeling them with the help of its spikes charging up thunderous strikes to shoot as shown above. But besides that it has the usual array of wyvern abilities most likely those being the ability to fly to swing at you from above. And maybe if it keep the trends of the rathalos and rathian maybe even a poisonous tail ? Another fun move it seems to have is being able to gore its opponents by charging electricity in its horns and then charging into whoever it’s fighting by frying their insides.
Ray Dau firing the bolt of electricity at a hunter.
A more close up view of Ray Dau.
But as I’m trying to avoid spoilers this is all I can cover. So I’m waiting with you all as I hope this game is as awesome as the trailers make it out to be.
