“‘Cause My Love is Mine all Mine” is a song with lyrics that you’ve probably heard on a video you’ve watched, or maybe even on the radio! This snippet of music comes from the song “My Love Mine All Mine” by Mitski. Mitski is a Japanese-American singer and songwriter who has released music since around 2012.
This is just one of the songs Mitski released and one that brought her into the spotlight. The song was released on her album “The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We”.
In an interview held with Genius, she mentions this is the first record where she stopped caring what people thought. The lines “Moon tell me if I could, Send up my heart to you..” and “…could it shine down here with you?” describe how she loves people and life and wishes she could let her love shine down on what she loves even after she passes on. The trending lyric that many people know and love, “‘Cause my love is mine All mine”, means that it’s the one thing that’s hers. The entirety of the song, in short, is saying she wants to leave her love behind when she’s gone, so that what she loves still feels it.
Her music has also shown to go into detail on some of her personal experiences or struggles. A prime example of this is shown in her song “Class of 2013” released on her album “Retired From Sad, New Career in Business”
album in 2013. Based on multiple combined analyses of Genius, the first verse, “Mom, I’m tired. Can I sleep in your house tonight?” was determined to give the resemblance of a child asking to have their mother’s comfort. During the second verse of the song, the lyrics “Mom, I’ll be quiet. It would be just to sleep at night. And I’ll leave once I figure out; How to pay for my own life too.” describe how she dreams to be a musician, but is struggling and is asking for her mom to take care of her while she dreams of her passion. The third verse hints at her doubting her ability to succeed and backing down from what she dreams of doing. This song shows the struggle many people may go through when trying to pursue their dreams, and how the inner emotions and thoughts control them.
One last song that goes into a deeper emotion is her song “Abbey” which was released in her album “Lush”
back in 2012. The opening line of the song is “I am hungry.” which is associated, in this case, as an emptiness. She uses it to explain a “… feeling of dissatisfaction with her current life..”. This somewhat hints that she feels as if she is lacking something, as the first verse continues with the lines “I am something, I have been something, What could I be?”. This line shows the singer going through an existential crisis. Once we reach verse 2, it says “I am waiting, I have been waiting..”. This reflects the singer’s feelings about her life, thinking it’s uneventful. It goes on to say “…I was born waiting, For that Something.”. According to a contributor from Genius, they said she can be waiting for ‘the light’. The final chorus of the song is a way of saying there’s something in her, that wants to be voiced. The lines “There is a light, I feel it in me. But only, it seems, when the dark surrounds me..” shows that voice being hidden, along with the lines “…There is a dream and it sleeps in me, To awake in the night, crying “Set me free”. Overall, this song shows a person longing for something to express themselves with, to make themselves known.
Overall, Mitski’s music goes into deep topics that may connect with many younger aspiring artists or those struggling with their emotions. I would recommend this music to anyone who wants music that has deeper meanings behind its lyrics and is one of my most enjoyed artists.
