A Day in the Life of a Dual Credit Junior at STEAM Academy
Waking up at 6:30 AM isn’t the most fun, especially when the comfort of your bed is calling your name. But I have to get up and get moving, because my day starts early. After dragging myself out of bed, I quickly get dressed, brush my teeth, and grab a quick breakfast. I leave home by 7:10 AM to head to STEAM Academy, where my first class starts at 8:00 AM.
First Class: Journalism at 8:00 AM
The first class of my day is Journalism. I’ve always loved writing, and it’s not much of a secret. Since Im in the process of writing my 3rd book so this class is a blast for me. I’m surrounded by other students who enjoy creating stories, writing articles, and discussing current events. It’s the kind of class where I can really express myself, and I’m always excited to see what assignments we’ll get next.
Second Class: Personal Finance at 9:13 AM
After Journalism, I head straight into Personal Finance. It’s not as exciting as writing, but it’s definitely important. We talk about managing money, budgeting, and planning for the future. As a high schooler, learning how to handle finances feels like something I should pay attention to—especially since I’m already juggling my dual credit courses and future plans. It’s practical knowledge that I know I’ll use when I’m older.
Leaving STEAM for BCTC Classes
By 10:20 AM, I leave STEAM and make my way to BCTC (Bluegrass Community and Technical College). This is where my dual credit classes are, and the best part is, I’m earning college credit while still in high school. It’s a little nerve-wracking at first, but I’m getting used to being around college students. It makes me feel like I’m one step closer to my future.
Monday Classes: BIO 112 at 11:00 AM & CIT 105 at 12:30 PM
On Mondays, I have two classes at BCTC. My first class is Biology (BIO 112), and even though it’s a lot of material to cover, I’m kind of enjoying it. I actually like learning about how the human body works. After that, I have Computer Information Technology (CIT 105) at 12:30 PM. This class is mostly about how computers and software work, and while it’s not my absolute favorite, it’s cool to know that I’m learning something I can apply in almost every job I might have.
Tuesdays: HIS 109 at 11:00 AM
On Tuesdays, I only have one class at BCTC: History (HIS 109) at 11:00 AM. It’s a pretty interesting class, and the professor really makes history come alive. I’ve always enjoyed history, and this class makes me feel like I’m getting a deeper understanding of how past events shape the present.
Waiting for the Bus and Back to STEAM
When my classes end, Sometimes I don’t have a ride waiting for me, so I’ll take the bus back to STEAM. I catch the 2:15 PM bus from BCTC, and it takes me back to school, where I’ll wait for another bus that takes me to Dunbar. From there, I hop on another bus home, which leaves around 3:21 PM. It’s a bit of a journey, but it gives me some downtime to just zone out and relax.
Evening Routine
I finally get home around 4:00 PM. The first thing I do is check if I have any plans for the night—sometimes I hang out with friends, other times I just relax. If I don’t have anything planned, I shower, which usually takes me about an hour. It’s my time to unwind and reset. After I shower, I get dressed depending on what I’m doing that evening.
Dinner and Nighttime Routine
If I don’t have plans, I’ll have dinner around 6:30 PM. Then, I head upstairs to my bathroom to brush my teeth and take my meds. By 8:00 PM, I’m in bed, lights off. I’m not always asleep by that time, but I like to lay there, thinking about my day and what’s coming up next. It’s a moment of calm before the next busy day begins.
Even though my days are long and packed with classes, buses, and study sessions, I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a dual credit student. It’s preparing me for the future, and it feels like I’m starting to figure out what I want to do with my life.
That’s a typical day in my life as a dual credit junior at STEAM Academy. Busy, but worth it!
